Hantavirus and rodent-borne viruses

In the last 6 years, our lab has participated in studying rodent-borne viral threats present in wild Mexican rodents. Initial research aimed to establish whether the new world hantavirus Sin Nombre Virus was present in Peromyscus maniculatus populations of the state of Sonora, Queretaro and San Luis Potosí.

Current efforts seek to establish, through two different projects, the presence of a broad group of new world hantaviruses including North-American variants such as Sin Nombre Virus (SNV), New York virus (NYV), Monnongahela virus (MGLV) and Prospect Hill virus (PHV); Hantaviruses likely to be present in Mexico such as Montano virus (MTNV), Huitzilac virus (HUIV), Carrizal virus (CARV), El Moro Canyon virus (ELMCV), Limestone Canyon virus (LSCV), Catacamas (CATV), Black Creek Canal virus (BCCV) and Bayou virus (BAYV); as well as Central and Southamerican Hantavirus such as Andes virus (ANDV) and Choclo (CHOV). In addition, recent efforts are underway to characterise the presence of the old world hantavirus, Seoul virus (SEOV) among wild rat populations as well as in domesticated laboratory rats. Our reserach interest aim to characterize specific hantavirus prevalece in Mexico, develop nucleic acid and serologic assays for their detection and for use in epidemiological surveillance.
