Arthropod-borne viral pathogens (Arbovirus) and mosquito vectors
In the last 4 years, our lab has participated in developing arbovirus and mosquito vector
screening methods and technologies to asisst both basic research projects as well as
epidemiological surveillance projects relating to mosquito transmited diseases (MTD).
Initial efforts focused on developing an economic yet efficient approach to mosquito
surveillance which included optimizing our locally designed mosquito trap (Yoy trap)
constructed from recylced materials. The trap derives its name from the Teneek indian
word for mosquito.
The Yoy trap offers a reliable, easy to deploy adult mosquito collection system which
enables both arbovirus and mosquito species surveillance in resource limited settings.
The Yoy trap includes a carbon dioxide gas generator, chemoattractans and viral RNA
preserving FTA cards impregnated with honey to achieve this purpose. The trap has been
successfully field tested since 2018 and has allowed us to provide a situational report
on the yearly fluctuations of mosquito populations in the city of San Luis Potosí.
Given the difficluties related to the morphological identification of mosquitoes for
taxonomical assignment of genus and species (availability of experienced entomologist,
subjectivity and loss of mosquito body structures during collection, transport and storage)
we also optimized an SSP-PCR based mosquito taxonomy approach targetting rRNA
internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2) sequences.
Furthermore, as our main research goal is to continuously assess arbovirus circulation
among mosquito populations, we developed an emerging arboviral pathogen detection
method based on real-time and end-point RT-PCR approach ( along with the much needed
vRNA preservation technology.
